Muntz Metal Sheet
Both Muntz metal and naval brass are copper alloys commonly used in sheet metal production. With a beautiful golden or yellow color, these metals offer unique traits and a distinctive appearance that is highly favored in many applications, particularly for architectural projects and interior design.
At Polished Metals, we offer both Muntz metal and naval brass in sheet form, cut and polished to a variety of forms and finishes. Our in-house metal finishing facility enables our team to complete high-volume metal finishing projects on time and with limited overhead, while our experienced team ensures superb quality every time.
About Muntz and Naval Brass
While Muntz and naval brass are distinct metals, they are often grouped together. This is because together they represent some of the most common copper alloys—that is, a combination of copper and another metal, in this case zinc.
Muntz metal comprises 60% copper and 40% zinc, along with traces of iron. Naval brass, on the other hand, typically includes 60% copper, around 39% zinc, and 1% tin. Naval brass may also include trace amounts of lead.
Muntz Metal & Naval Brass Sheet Applications
While Muntz and naval brass can be produced in a wide variety of forms, both of these alloys are most commonly seen as a metal sheet or plate. Muntz metal was originally intended for maritime use (such as for ship hulls), though naval brass—as its name suggests—later usurped Muntz for this application.
Some of the industries where Muntz and naval brass sheet metal are most popular include:
- Shipping/Maritime – With excellent corrosion resistance, durability, and affordability, Muntz—and later naval brass—saw a large amount of use for the protective hulls of ships, as well as marine buildings such as piers.
- Architecture – These days, Muntz and naval brass sheets and plates are more commonly used for their aesthetic appeal, rather than strictly for their functional properties. It’s easy to see why: the golden-yellow color of these metals creates a striking appearance that stands out from the typical grays and silvers of most concrete and metal structures. However, the functional properties still help, as Muntz and naval brass both see effective use for architectural projects located near the coast.
- Design – Muntz and naval brass are also popular inside of buildings. While typically this involves plates rather than sheet metal, both Muntz and naval brass can frequently be seen within elevators and on other interior fixtures.
