What Is Brushed Brass?
Brushed brass refers to any brass product that is finished with an abrasive material and left with a grooved or lined surface, a byproduct of the abrasive process. This grooved texture leaves the metal slightly rough or textured to the touch.
Brushed brass also features a brighter sheen compared to satin finishes, though not as bright as fully polished brass. Brushed and satin finish are terms that are sometimes used interchangeably, and these finishes are often used in the same situations, but they are not identical.
Properties of Brushed Brass
As mentioned, brushed brass has a textured appearance and feel, but the smoother metal between the grooves of the finish results in a brighter shine. By contrast, satin brass has a duller finish.
The textured appearance of brushed brass makes it ideal for hiding scratches, smudges, and fingerprints compared to mirror polished brass. In addition to this resistance to visible scratches, this metal is also corrosion resistant, durable, and features a muted gold color that lends it to adding elegance to many design visions.
Use Cases
Brushed brass is perfect for higher-traffic environments where less frequent cleaning is desired. It may also be chosen for its aesthetic qualities or even for structural purposes as brass is a relatively strong metal. Below are some common use cases:
- Detailing in the home, including on appliances and cabinets, plumbing fixtures, and doorknobs
- Interior design such as lobbies of hotels and offices, elevators (including elevator cabs, doors, and railings), escalators, and trim
- Architectural and exterior features, such as entryways, safety railings, signage and lettering
