Naval Brass Sheet Metal & Other Marine Grade Metals
Metal is utilized across nearly every industry, and with that, a wide range of environments. The marine industry is no different and requires a specific mix of characteristics to both meet the structural need, but also to avoid corrosion for as long as possible. There are a few specific metals, and their alloys, that are chosen specifically for their ability to withstand water (either freshwater or saltwater) for extreme periods of time.
Why Alloys Over Pure Metals?
While some metals are quite corrosion resistant, this characteristic can be drastically improved when alloyed with other elements, like nickel, sulfur, chromium, or manganese. The alloyed metals can provide additional resistance to corrosion, but can also improve machinability, hardness, or overall strength. Examples of alloys that are ideal for marine applications include:
Naval Brass
Naval brass, often starting in the form of a naval brass sheet or a naval brass plate, is a copper alloy comprised of 59% Copper, 40% Zinc, and 1% Tin, often with trace amounts of Lead. Naval Brass was originally developed for seawater applications. Tin was included in the alloy composition in order to improve the Naval Brass’ resistance to corrosion – incredibly important when constantly exposed to seawater.
Aluminum
While pure aluminum is highly resistant to corrosion, constant exposure to the elements in marine applications can cause problems. When alloyed with other elements, aluminum becomes even more resistant to corrosion and can tolerate constant contact with both saltwater and freshwater.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is used across many industries due to it’s combination of strength and resistance to corrosion, and there are many grades of stainless stell that that are suitable to use in marine applications. Marine grade stainless steel is used in many applications that include constant exposure to water.
