Use of Metal for Interior Design
Metals have been used throughout the past century for interior design purposes, but they have been utilized more and more in the past few decades. The use of different types of metals, mixing metals, and using metals as statement pieces have all become more and more desirable.
When used tastefully, metals can bring beauty, strength, austerity, solidity, and sophistication to a space. Modern, contemporary, futuristic, and many other styles of architecture and design may use metals for both interior and exterior design purposes depending on a project’s overall vision.
Types of Metals Used in Interior Design
Many types of metals may be used for interior design purposes:
Brass
Like many metals, brass is available in many different grades. Brass is rust-resistant and is used for effect on trim such as screws and light fittings. It is used on doors and cabinetry as hardware
Copper
When unpolished, copper is usually a salmon red or pink color. This metal is soft, ductile, and malleable. When allowed to oxidize, it becomes patina or soft green. Designers love both colors for their rustic or bright finish
Bronze
This alloy is created by combining copper and tin. When in a molten form, it is a liquid. This is among the reasons why it is implemented in castings. It can be used on artwork, such as busts, for intricate designs and detailed work.
Aluminum
Aluminum is one of the most used metals for interior design metal finishes. You can find it used for framing and furniture, door and window joinery, roof cladding, etc. Dull grey and semi-soft in form, it can be polished into many different finishes.
